 DMU

18th May 1978

In the yard of the former Lostock Hall Depot then used for wagon repairs, the Fisons Weedkilling Train was stabled between duties on May 18th 1978. The spray coach, FA99900 was a former Gloucester RC&W DMU car E56315, built in 1958. The other vehicles in the consist were an LMS coach and two GWR full brakes. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

18th May 1978

The Fisons Weedkilling Train had been stabled in the yard of what was once Lostock Hall MPD on the evening of May 18th 1978. The spray coach numbered FA99900, had been converted from a Gloucester Railway Carriage & Wagon Company Class 100 Driving Trailer Composite Lavatory (DTCL) DMU car E56315 that had been built in 1958. Lostock Hall MPD had been the last operational BR steam depot, and following the end of steam in August 1968, the depot serviced and stabled diesels in the Preston area until 1973. The depot then became a railway wagon repair facility until closure in 1990. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

15th July 1982

The Fisons weed control train was stabled between duties at the former Lostock Hall MPD on July 15th 1982. The nearest vehicle was FA99900 in use as a spray control coach, and was originally a Gloucester Railway Carriage & Wagon Company DMU car E56315 dating from 1958. Lostock Hall MPD was the last operational steam shed on the British Railways standard gauge network, and after steam finished in August 1968, it became a diesel depot until 1973. It then was used for repairing wagons & coaches, until closed completely in 1986, when the site remained derelict until demolition in 1990. The area remains undeveloped and the shed area with the footprint of the buildings and filled-in inspection pits, is still clearly defined. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

28th April 1987

With West Yorkshire PTE 'Metro Train' branding, a two-car Class 111 DMU formed of cars E78971 & E78713 was passing Lostock Hall with a Preston to Leeds service on April 28th 1987. The pair of cars were renumbered in the 78xxx series following conversion to single engine cars in the mid 1980's. Visible on the left is the former Lostock Hall MPD, then still in use for wagon repairs. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

7th May 1987

Complete with bars fitted to the door droplights due to tight clearances inside Holme Tunnel on the Copy Pit route that connects Lancashire with West Yorkshire, a two-car BRCW Class 104 DMU formed of cars M53472 & M53500 was passing Lostock Hall Junction with a Preston to Leeds service on May 7th 1987. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

11th July 1987

Set: TS251

A pair of two-car Derby Class 116 Suburban DMU's were making a rare appearance at Lostock Hall with a Preston to Colne service on July 11th 1987. The rear set complete with its West Midlands PTE branding was formed of cars M53833 & M54281 (TS251). This was during the period when problems with the almost new Class 142 fleet were manifesting themselves, and the pair of suburbans would have been a short-term loan out from Tyseley Depot to Newton Heath. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

17th October 1987

A well laden two-car BRCW Class 104 DMU formed of cars M53465 & M53499 was departing from Lostock Hall on the last stage of its journey with a Colne to Preston service on October 17th 1987. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

24th October 1987

Complete with a Network South East logo on the bodyside, a Class 104 formed of cars 53522 & 53541 was stood at Lostock Hall with the 11.05 Blackpool South to Colne Service on October 24th 1987. The station here opened in 1984, replacing an earlier station situated on the other side of the bridge, which had closed in 1969. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

7th May 1988

Set: T302

A three-car Pressed Steel Suburban DMU with Driving Motor Brake Second 51360 leading (presumably with 59512 + 51402), was passing Lostock Hall Junction with the Sunday Preston to Carlisle 'Dalesrail' service on May 7th 1988. Suburban type DMU's were never common sights around the Preston area, until several sets were transferred to Newton Heath in the latter part of the 1980's to provide cover for Class 142 Pacers that were being sidelined with various issues. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

2nd July 1988

Set: T308

A Pressed Steel built Class 117 3-Car Suburban Unit, T308 with Driving Motor Second 51413 leading (presumably with 59509 + 51371), was stood at Lostock Hall with the Sunday Preston to Carlisle 'DalesRail' service on July 2nd 1988. Running via Blackburn and Clitheroe, this service ran along the Ribble Valley line prior to regular passenger services being reinstated in 1991. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

2nd July 1988

Set: T308

A Tyseley allocated Pressed Steel built Class 117 3-car Suburban DMU formed of cars 51413, 59509 and 51371, was passing under Watkin Lane bridge as it arrived at Lostock Hall with a Preston to Carlisle 'Dalesrail' service on July 2nd 1988. Complete with its Tyseley TS308 board in the offside cab window, the set was on temporary loan to Newton Heath during the period when the class 142 Pacer fleet was in a state of flux due to ongoing reliability issues, and before new class 150/2 Sprinters had arrived in sufficent quantities. This particular set was the last Class 117 to remain in operation on the national network, and following withdrawal in 1996, the driving cars were eventually converted as water jetting vehicles for use with Chiltern Railways and returned to BR green livery. They were finally withdrawn in 2015, and both cars have survived into preservation. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

6th August 1988

Class 108 Driving Motor Brake Second M53944 was leading a seven-car DMU formation arriving at Lostock Hall with the Sunday Blackpool North to Carlisle 'Dalesrail' service on August 6th 1988. The service was made up of a two-car Class 108 (both DMBSs), a two-car Class 104 & a three-car Class 101. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

Set: N608

Class 108 Driving Trailer Second Lavatory (DTSL) car M54261 was leading the eight-car Blackpool North to Carlisle Sunday Dalesrail service, passing Lostock Hall Junction on September 7th 1988. The service was made up of three pairs of Class 108's with a Class 104 bringing up the rear. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

23rd September 1989

Set: CH252

A six-car Class 108 formation, with Driving Motor Brake Second M51419 leading (presumably paired with 54494), was passing Lostock Hall Junction with the Carlisle bound Sunday 'Dalesrail' service on September 23rd 1989. Martyn Hilbert.

LO295 (presumably 53951 + 54235) at Lostock Hall on a Blackpool South to Colne working in 1992. John McIntyre.

 DMU

19th September 1993

Set: 101681

A pair of Longsight allocated Class 101's 101681 (51228 & 51506) & 101690 (51435 & 53177), had just left the WCML at nearby Farington Junction and were running along the 'Back Line' at Ward Street Lostock Hall, heading for the East Lancashire route at Lostock Hall Junction with the Sunday Only 08.35 Manchester Piccadilly to Carlisle 'Dalesrail' service on September 19th 1993. I think the Dalesrail only ran along here for this one season. They subsequently went on to Preston and reversed. Martyn Hilbert.
